Susan Duff and her daughters — Haylie wearing a cream-colored sweater and beret atop a black skirt and fishnet stockings, Hilary in a short black skirt and tights — huddled in the judge's chambers when the court wasn't in session. Bob Duff, a godson of the late Houston philanthropist Audrey Jones Beck who owns a chain of convenience stores, among other business ventures, wasn't in court Thursday.
After a hearing earlier this month, he acknowledged that the divorce has driven a wedge between him and his daughters. He stayed in Houston when his wife moved to Los Angeles more than a decade ago with Hilary, now 20, and Haylie, now Hilary Duff broke through in with tween hit Lizzie McGuire on the Disney Channel ; since then, both sisters have found success, although Hilary is better known.
They filed as intervenors in the case several months ago, raising questions about a trust involving family land in Central Texas that their father set up for them 15 years ago.
Lawyer Robert Piro , who represents Bob Duff, characterized the Duff sisters' petition as "a fishing expedition" that shouldn't be part of the divorce. Raley argued that the loan and other issues regarding the trust could affect the divorce but that he needs more information from Brad Duff to determine that. Neither sister spoke in court Thursday, instead listening intently as their mother testified that she has not worked since and has been supported primarily by her daughters for the past five years.
