Even though we headed there in winter, this is a great spot to come during the spring and summer. The mountain areas can be anywhere from degrees cooler than the valley and offer great hikes, seasonal waterfalls and awesome canyon views.
Once inside the park, the speed limit slows down considerably and there are several forks in the road to choose. We first forked to the left but that basically took us around to a restaurant which was nice for a quick and clean bathroom break , but ultimately headed back down to the right to find the slopes.
As we were looking for somewhere to park, we noticed that people were sledding on each side of the road. It was almost like winter wonderland and every where I looked, I saw someone else racing down the mountain-side.
After seeing how much fun everyone was having and since we arrived mid-day, we decided to save some money and just go sledding instead of skiing. What a fantastic decision! Living in Southern California and only seeing snow maybe once or twice a year, it takes a little while to get used to walking around in it again.
Bob almost ate it several times from the ice on the road and after watching him do so, I decided to take to the side of the road and nearly got stuck as I started sinking! There's snow near Las Vegas! Snow is common in the Winter months and is a great escape from the desert! Scenic Chair Rides are only available during Summer Operations. In the Winter you must be skiing or snowboarding to use the chair lifts. Equipment must be on to ride lift. Sledding and Snow-play is not allowed at the ski resort itself. There are a few open snow-play areas below the resort with very limited parking and variable conditions. Click here for more information on the Foxtail Snowplay Area.
During the Winter season we do NOT allow pets at the resort. We're Hiring! Snow chains and four-wheel-drive are required when snowstorms hit Mount Charleston.
When you come up from Las Vegas for snow be prepared. Check road conditions before you head out. All wheels must be to the right of the white line fog line to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Illegally parked vehicles can and will be fined and towed. Pack it in, Pack it out. If you have the room to bring it, you obviously have to room to take it.
